Then and Now.
In 2002, flatirons purchased 24 acres of land on the east side of Lafayette in order to address the need for greater space to house the continual growth. It was our initial hope to stay in the heart of the city, but given that it was prime tax-generating real estate, both the church and city saw it fit to continue development of the 24 acre property.
Through the years, many of the large “box” stores fell vacant on South Boulder Road. So, we approached the city with the idea that simply moving to a larger strip mall was much more in line with our DNA. The city continued to feel that it was in everyone’s best interest to stay the course with a new facility on the east side of town.
In the midst of finalizing plans for a new facility, the economic downturn darkened the lights in even more retail space along South Boulder Road. This prompted us to once again knock on the city’s door in the fall of 2009 to try opening discussions about renovating, recycling and reusing the blighted warehouse space across the street—specifically the old Walmart and Albertsons buildings. This time, the city was open to discussion and we all agreed that keeping flatirons in the middle of the city is best for all involved.
Now, after many seemingly locked doors have been unlocked, we have moved into our new building. We were able to tackle this project because we all banded together...we call it BRiX. Building Relationships in Christ. Jesus never told anyone to go and build buildings. He told us to go and build up people. He told us to love God and love people. Jesus never told us to fix people, change people or save anyone. He told us to create environments and opportunities for people we care about to "bump into" Jesus...and then, Jesus could do what only He can do. Over the past years at flatirons, people who believed that this was true made sure that each one of us had a place where we could come and "bump into Jesus." Now, it's our turn. This building is only a vehicle to build relationships...because that's what it's always been about.
