PARENT BIBLE STUDY

Read: Luke 5:1-11

It had been a long night of bad fishing and Simon was done. When Jesus asked him to push his boat out a little deeper and throw out his nets again for a catch of fish, Simon was tired. But the Bible tells us that Simon knew Jesus was different. He addressed Jesus as Master and Lord. There was an authority in Jesus that captivated him. He couldn’t ignore it. As much as his weary spirit may have wanted to, he couldn’t say no. The words of Jesus he’d just heard were fresh on his mind, and with a new but wavering faith, Simon did what Jesus asked. The catch of fish that followed nearly sunk his boat. Just like that, Simon decided he was going to follow Jesus. That moment made Simon want to become as much like Jesus as possible.

What was different about that second attempt at catching fish? It was the same boat, the same water, the same Simon, but the presence of Jesus was a total game-changer.

When Jesus is with us, life is going to be different. His presence fills even the emptiest, most hopeless spaces. We may spend long nights in darkness and come up empty more times than we thought we could bear, but the presence of Jesus will sustain us, change us, and fill us with something that will never run out.

God will continue to call us deeper and deeper. We can know that he is near, that he has stepped into our boat, and that changes everything.

Think about a time when the presence of Jesus in your life altered its course.

How has it changed your faith to know that God is near?
