PARENT BIBLE STUDY

Read: Ruth 1

Naomi was in a hopeless situation. She and her daughters-in-law, Ruth and Orpah, were all widowed. Ruth and Orpah insisted on journeying with Naomi back to Judah, even though it meant leaving their own people. Naomi practically begged them to stay and find new life and new husbands in their homeland, and Orpah eventually agreed this was best and stayed. But not Ruth.

The Bible tells us that, “Ruth replied [to Naomi], ‘… where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me,’” Ruth 1:16-17.

Ruth bravely decided to follow a God she didn’t know, one that her new family believed was the one true God. In that moment, Ruth’s decision of faith changed the course of history. She was heading toward her future husband and children who would be in the bloodline that eventually led to Jesus – the Savior of the world. Not knowing any of that, Ruth simply acted in faith. In faith, she left the safety of her people and the life she knew. Hebrews 11:1 tells us that “faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

Hard seasons of life have a way of revealing our character, don’t they? Our faith is tested. This is why, as followers of Jesus, we have to separate what we know to be true, from our circumstances or our emotions. These hard seasons of life are when we make a deliberate choice to trust the character of God. He is a God who remains constant when our circumstances and emotions do not.

How do you keep your faith strong in hard seasons?

Ruth decided to follow God based on the faith of the family she married into. Their lives pointed to the one, true God. Does your life point people to God?
