What Is Worship? | Week 5

May 5, 2024 | By Ben Foote

How can we really grow strong in our faith? In our latest message, inspired by the survival show "Alone," Ben Foote talks about the importance of spiritual tools. He explains that worship is more than just singing songs; it's really about listening to God every day and doing what He asks. Just like an axe is crucial in a survival situation for building and staying warm, worship is just as important in our spiritual lives. It helps us stay close to Jesus and makes our faith strong, so we can truly thrive as followers of God.

// Discussion Questions

  1. Ben emphasized that worship isn’t solely about singing songs, but rather it involves assigning worth to something. Can you think of anything in our lives that we may unintentionally 'worship' that might not be beneficial? How has this misplaced worship affected our lives and relationships?
  2. Ben likened worship to an essential tool for survival, much like an axe in outdoor settings. How does this analogy of the axe being crucial for survival relate to the role of worship in our lives with Jesus? Can you think of other analogies that might help illustrate the significance of worship in your relationship with God?
  3. Read Matthew 15:7-9. Ben explained that worship is about recognizing and declaring one's place in the relationship with God. Ben encourages physically showing reverence and a declaration of loyalty by bowing or kneeling in prayer. How does worship go beyond just singing songs? How can you incorporate worship in other aspects of your daily life?
  4. Ben emphasized the importance of obedience in worship, saying that worship is showing reverence to God by obeying Him. How is obedience tied to worship, and why is it important? What steps can you take to be more obedient to God in your own life?
  5. Read Romans 12:1-2. Ben challenged the congregation to be transformed by renewing their minds, changing their mindset to think like Jesus, and putting His words into practice. What does it mean to be transformed by renewing your mind? How can you actively work on renewing your mind and aligning your thoughts with God's will?

// Challenge: Can you commit to bowing or kneeling when we pray this week? Be prepared to share next week how this physical action affected our prayer life or our understanding of our relationship to God.
