Gen-Z has been given many labels. Although many of them are exaggerated and untrue, one label that rings true is that this generation can be defined by loneliness and mental health struggles. Despite being a generation that is constantly socially connected online, isolation poses a massive health risk according to the World Health Organization. Currently, Gen Zers use social media over 4 hours per day. Being constantly tapped into current events, and beauty trends, chasing the algorithm is taking a toll. 77% of college-aged students are experiencing some sort of mental health issue, including anxiety and depression, according to the American College Health Association. This future generation doesn’t deserve to be lost in a world of screens, distractions, and isolation. They deserve to make meaningful face-to-face relationships with peers and leaders so they can step into adulthood, tackle their education, and settle into their future careers.
Gen-Z is craving something more from this world. It’s not that this generation wants to bury their faces in their phones. The issue is that there aren’t many places to foster genuine in-person connections, according to an article in Psychology Today. Authentic connection, purpose, and security can be found in a faith-based community. Faith and education don’t have to be separate entities when it comes to post-high school life plans. It’s possible to earn a degree and find a strong faith-based community. Gen-Z needs like-minded Christ followers who will walk alongside them. They can find this sort of fellowship at Flatirons College.
Flatirons College can reduce this generation-wide isolation by giving Gen-Z a community to build trust, intimacy, a sense of belonging, and accountability for other people. Established in 2022, Flatirons College offers 9 different online degree programs through Southeastern University. Small class sizes encourage students to create foundational lifelong friendships. Activities like retreats and morning devotionals help deepen these connections. Students will also have access to a thriving local church, a staff that’s deeply invested in their success, and a space to champion God’s unique calling in their lives.
The Flatirons College experience also allows students to explore the beautiful state of Colorado. This state has an endless list of activities and adventures to embark on, with four national parks and 42 state parks. There’s no shortage of nature and exploration to be had as students make connections outside of the classroom.
The next generation needs an authentic community that will help them battle the isolating pitfalls of the digital world. That’s why Flatirons College is doing something different. It’s not just a college where students can earn a degree. It’s a safe place for them to find a network of friends who will “do life” with them in their faith in Jesus. Isolation, loneliness, and depression don’t have to be the theme for Gen-Z students. They can find purpose and community through friendships, Jesus, and a non-traditional higher education experience like Flatirons College.
