Sound Mind
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7; NIV
Have you watched the news lately? If you have, did it make you feel scared about the future? Did it leave you feeling nervous about your bank accounts or the stock market? Did it leave you feeling heavy-hearted about your children’s future?
The news often features negative headlines and stories that can cause anyone to feel overwhelmed. I have some good news to share with you today. We don’t have to feel afraid when we walk with God, because Jesus ushers hope into our lives. How incredible is it that we can hold on to hope and courage during chaotic times when we walk with Jesus?
Second Timothy 1:7 (ESV) tells us that God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love, and self-control. We can stay strong and clear-minded even when chaos surrounds us because being anchored in Jesus provides us with stability.
Consider the importance of self-control in our lives. Self-control goes against the natural flow of this world. We often hear, “Do what makes you happy,” or “Follow your heart.” But as followers of Jesus, we are called to think differently. We are encouraged to make choices and live in a way that honors God in everything we do and say, using self-control.
Recently, I had the chance to put this scripture into action. As I drove seven hours to a woman’s retreat, I caught myself getting distracted by negative and fearful thoughts. Will my children be okay with their dad? Will I feel refreshed and revitalized after I leave this retreat? Will the other women there be kind to me? What if they don’t like me? There was a moment I had to declare 2 Timothy 1:7 over my life and circumstances. God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind! I will enjoy this retreat, I will make new friends, and my children will have a wonderful time making their own memories with dad. In that moment, I chose to use God’s truth as a weapon to combat my feelings (Philippians 4:8).
Instead of walking into a room feeling insecure, I encourage you to walk into your spaces with God-confidence. God has good plans for your life—plans to prosper you, give you hope, and a future. He has given you His power, His love, and a sound mind. God will continue to do great things in your life as you continue to trust Him. No matter where you are, you can always trust that He is with you.
Today is a great day to start living as who God says you are and embracing the empowered life He died to give you. What circumstances in your life can you begin to declare 2 Timothy 1:7 over? Remind yourself daily that God has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. God loves you and will always walk with you as you navigate the roads ahead.
