Why Men Love Fire: The Spirit, the Flame, and the Power of Brotherhood

Posted by Mark Jenkins on

There’s just something about fire that draws men in.

You’ve probably noticed it. Gather a group of men around a fire pit and watch what happens. The conversation shifts. Phones go dark. Stories start rolling. There’s laughter, honesty…even some depth. And for a minute, the weight of the world feels a little lighter.

Why is that?

I think it’s because fire connects us to something ancient…primitive even. Since the beginning of time, men have gathered around fires for warmth, survival, strategy, and story. Fire meant food. Fire meant safety. Fire pulled people together. And maybe that’s why even now, something in us still longs for that space…to slow down, speak up, and be known.

But I believe it goes deeper.

All throughout Scripture, fire isn’t just a practical tool, it’s a powerful symbol of how God moves.

God speaks to Moses from a burning bush. He leads His people through the desert with a pillar of fire at night. And in Acts 2, when the Holy Spirit descends on the disciples, He shows up like “tongues of fire” resting on each one of them. Fire has always been one of the ways God reveals, refines, and reminds us of His presence and power.

And here’s what I’ve learned: the fire of the Holy Spirit doesn’t just comfort; it transforms.

Sometimes it’s like a steady warmth that draws you in. Other times, it’s a burn…conviction, challenge, change. But both are good. Both are needed.

Because that fire lights up what’s been hidden. It burns away what’s holding us back. And it makes space for something new to grow.

Maybe you’ve felt it. That flicker of courage to say what needs to be said. That nudge to confess something you’ve kept tucked away. Or maybe it shows up as a slow, holy burn when God starts peeling back the layers you’ve used to protect yourself and says, “Let me in.”

It’s not easy. But it’s holy ground.

The truth is, most of us are carrying stuff God never asked us to carry—expectations, regrets, pride, pain. But when we let the Spirit’s fire do its work, those lies and labels start to fall away. And what rises is the real you…the man God created, loved into existence by a Father who’s never let go.

That’s refinement. That’s how real faith is forged.

But here’s the thing, we’re not meant to go through that alone.

Fire was never meant to be experienced in isolation. That’s why we build fire pits. That’s why we circle up. We need other men to remind us we’re not crazy, we’re not weak, and we’re not alone.

“As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” – Proverbs 27:17

That’s what happens when men show up, not just to hang, but to be present. To ask the real questions. To listen. To pray. To stand shoulder-to-shoulder when life is good and when it’s anything but.

We need spaces where we can drop the act. Where we can be honest about what’s going on. Where we can struggle without shame, celebrate without competition, and grow without pretending.

That’s where real brotherhood is forged.
And honestly? That’s where the Spirit does some of His best work, in the middle of that shared flame.

So maybe that’s why fire still fascinates us.
Because deep down…we know we need it.

We need the warmth of real community.
We need the refining work of the Holy Spirit.
We need the kind of space where the masks come off and something real can rise in their place.

So, here’s my challenge: Don’t avoid the fire…lean into it.

Say yes to that invite.
Join a Firepit Group.
Start the conversation.
Ask for prayer.
Let someone see the real you.
And ask the Spirit to keep burning; not to destroy you, but to refine you into who God created you to be.

Because that’s what men of God do.
We gather.
We grow.
We burn brighter…together.
