PARENT BIBLE STUDY

Read: 1 Samuel 17

Goliath was a nine-and-a-half-foot tall soldier and leader of the Philistine army. He was intimidating and threatening, and because losing to him meant slavery and oppression, the Israelites were paralyzed with fear. When David heard Goliath’s threat for the first time, his response was simple.

“Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?” he said in 1 Samuel 17:26. David responded to an impossible situation with bold confidence in the character of God. He marched straight into King Saul’s presence and declared that he would be the one to defeat Goliath.

But David wasn’t old enough, or big enough to even BE in the army, let alone defeat its biggest, strongest, most intimidating enemy to date. Saul responded to David much like we probably would have by reminding David of all the reasons he wasn’t the warrior the Israelite army needed to match Goliath. However, David’s confidence wasn’t found in the king’s words. Instead, he found his courage in the one true God. He was so convinced of the Lord’s power and ability to do great things through him that he never even questioned his own ability (or lack thereof). David was confident that God would stand for his people and rescue them from any threat, no matter the size.

When Goliath saw David, he was insulted by David’s small and unassuming appearance. David was not only tiny in comparison, but he carried five simple stones and a sling and had no armor at all. He didn’t look like someone who could match or exceed Goliath’s strength, stature, and ability. But the Bible tells us over and over that this didn’t matter one bit. Appearance? Who cares. Accomplishments? Doesn’t matter. Experience? Not in the equation. All that matters is that we trust, like David did, that whatever opposition we are facing is no match for an undefeated God.

Standing on that truth gives us the courage we need to enter the battle.

Romans 8:31 tells us that “If God is for us, who can be against us?” Do you believe this verse to be true when you hold it up to the hard things in your life?

Goliath assumed David would be an insultingly easy win. His snarky, snide remarks could have been intimidating and defeating. But David listened to God’s voice and allowed God to define his confidence, not Goliath, or even King Saul for that matter. What voices do you need to silence so you can only listen to God’s?
