- That story with Elisha was crazy, huh?! What do you think they were afraid of? (Discuss.)
- Have any of you ever been scared of something? Will you share? (Share with kids.)
- How do you think we can remember that God is bigger than our fears? (Discuss. Give some examples like reading our Bible, praying to God, remembering stories like the one with Elisha and others.)
Let’s pray and thank our good God.
Dear God, thank you for promising to help us with our worries. Help us know that you will always be with us. We love you and pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
Read: 2 Kings 6:8-22
Aram’s army came to seize Elisha in the middle of the night, and Elisha’s servant started to panic when he saw the giant army of horses and chariots that surrounded the entire city. It had to have been an incredibly intimidating sight.
But what’s more important isn’t what the servant saw, but what he couldn’t see. Thankfully, Elisha prayed for his servant’s eyes to be opened, and they were. He was able to see with full clarity that God’s army was protecting and defending them from the Syrians. God’s army was not only bigger than the Syrian army, but literally on fire with the power of God. And just as Elisha’s servant’s eyes were opened, Elisha “blinded” the Syrian army. Likely this wasn’t actual, physical blindness, but more of a general unawareness and confusion of reality so he could trick them and lead them away from threatening the Israelites.
When we are up against the things in our lives that feel impossible, we can call this story to mind. We all have plenty of examples in our lives when fear surrounds us, and we feel like we can’t see a way to overcome. But we can pray for our eyes to be opened. Because the truth is that God is always with us, surrounding and protecting us. Psalm 91:11 says, “for he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” As real as oppression is in this world, whether it’s physical, emotional, or spiritual, God’s presence with us is just as real. Our advantage is the power of God protecting us, battling for us. And we can trust that his is a force more powerful than anything that can come against us.
What battles are you facing right now? What is threatening to surround and defeat you?
Can you pray for God to open your eyes to see his power protecting and defending you? Write down and memorize Psalm 91:11 to help bring this truth to mind.
