PARENT BIBLE STUDY

Read: Galatians 3:15-29

God promised Abraham that he would be the father of many nations, the father of a family marked by the grace, mercy, and compassion of God. But for years and years, Abraham was childless and saw no hope for the fulfillment of God’s promise. Can you imagine sitting in that tension? But Abraham continued to wait patiently for a son. And in the meantime, he left the comfort of his home, the land of his father, to follow God in obedience. Finally, 20 years after God’s promise to Abraham, at the ripe old age of 99, he and his wife welcomed their first son Isaac, and with him came joy, hope, and peace.

Isaac was a promised son. Jesus was also a promised son. Like Abraham, Jesus left the comfort of life with his Father God. And while Abraham’s obedience led generations of people to the promised land, a mere shadow of God’s kingdom, Jesus’ obedience fulfilled God’s promise to provide a perfect kingdom. Galatians 3:7 reminds us that we are all children of Abraham when we have faith. Because of Jesus, we inherit God’s promise and blessing to Abraham. And in that promise there is great joy, great hope, and great peace for us, too.

Abraham’s story is marked by waiting. Have you ever waited through a hard season for a very, very long time? Abraham trusted God’s promise. Can you?

Because of Jesus, every promise and blessing to Abraham is ours, too. We are children of God. He is our Father who loves us and sees us. Intentionally sit with that truth this week.
