PARENT BIBLE STUDY

Read: Luke 2:1-7, Isaiah 9:1-7

The Son of God came to earth as a fragile, tiny baby. He was the fulfillment of all God’s promises. He was the hope of the world. And he was helpless. The birth of Jesus was both the most significant event in history, and a strikingly normal occasion. God could’ve chosen to enter into humanity in any possible way, but in his infinite wisdom, he chose an ordinary human birth.

This proclaimed the truth from the very beginning that God’s kingdom is different. Jesus would be a Wonderful Counselor, but his wisdom would elevate the lowly and ease their burdens. He would be a Mighty God, but his power would forgive rather than punish. He would be an Everlasting Father, but he would accomplish the eternal by experiencing mortality. He would be the Prince of Peace, but his peace would divide families and tear down religion. King Jesus came to earth as a baby to announce that in his kingdom, the humble are exalted. The poor are rich. The marginalized and shamed are worthy and put in places of honor.

This is important. With the ordinary birth of Jesus comes an extraordinary truth: God’s kingdom is for all of us. We are all lowly and burdened by our sin. We all deserve punishment, but need forgiveness. We are all mortal, yet yearning for the eternal.

God brought heaven to us and in doing so shone light into our darkness and gave us the opportunity to live in peace with him, ourselves, and others.

The birth of Jesus declares this truth: Hope was born for all of us.

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone,” Isaiah 9:2.

It’s no secret that the world is dark and broken. How does Jesus’ birth give you hope for all people and for the whole world?
