Read: Matthew 4:1-11

How can we stand against sin when it’s literally staring us in the face?

Jesus felt tempted in every way that we do. He laid aside his divine power and experienced the weakness and vulnerability of being human, just like us. That’s why the story of Jesus being tempted gives us a perfect example of resisting the devil.

Satan is not dumb. He is smart and his lies are manipulative. He knows where we are weak. He tempted Jesus in areas he was most vulnerable, and he does the same to us. Satan even used God’s Word to tempt Jesus! But Jesus knew the truth so well he was able to both recognize and invalidate Satan’s lies.

Jesus also knew who he was as God’s Son. Knowing his identity allowed him to resist Satan. Jesus shows us that knowing God–and who we are in him as his redeemed sons and daughters–is our best defense against Satan.

We can stand in the same victory over sin as Jesus because Jesus took every one of our battles with sin to the cross, fought them, and won. He knows the temptations we face and can save us from them. We can stand in the confidence that we have been rescued, that Jesus sees us and can sympathize with us, and that he promises to give us the grace, mercy, and strength we need to resist every temptation we face.

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tested in every way as we are, yet without sin. Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us at the proper time,” Hebrews 4:15-16.

Take an honest assessment of where you are most vulnerable. How does Satan tempt you in these areas?

When you feel tempted, do you call to mind God’s Word? In order to recognize lies, we have to know the truth of God’s Word. What are some ways you can affirm your identity in God and know his truth better?
