Who was he giant in our story today? (Goliath)
Who helped David defeat Goliath? (God)
What did David use to fight Goliath? (a sling shot and five stones)
Read: 1 Samuel 17:38-51
When David told King Saul that he would be the one to defeat Goliath, it didn’t go over well. Saul had plenty of doubts, as did David’s brothers, and probably the rest of the Israelite army. Even Goliath, the nine-and-a-half-foot tall warrior and leader of the Philistine army, was insulted by David’s small and unassuming appearance. David was not only tiny in comparison, but he carried five simple stones and a sling, and had no armor at all. He didn’t look like a competitor, let alone someone who could match or exceed Goliath’s strength, stature, and ability. It wasn’t exactly the dramatic warrior match Goliath was hoping for.
This wasn’t the first-time people had doubted David. It had become a pattern in his life. But what had also become a pattern for David was trusting God and listening only to his voice. David wasn’t distracted by other people’s doubts or by fear. He knew that if his identity came from the one, true God, neither a giant, nor the opinions of others were a threat. Nothing mattered but the voice of God reminding him who he was. He had all the strength and confidence he needed, because his strength and confidence were rooted in the truth of God.
It is so easy for us to miss God’s voice when we’re surrounded by the voices of so many other people and things, all fighting to give us identity. We may allow our bank account to tell us our worth, our boss to communicate our value, our parents/kids to dictate our identity, or the clothes in our closet to affirm our individuality. But the truth is, none of those things have the authority to tell us who we are. Only God does. When we believe that our identity is secure in God, we can be like David and accept a task and calling from God that seems completely ridiculous to everyone else.
We know we are enough because we know the God who made us is more than enough.
What kinds of things can you do to remind yourself the truth of what God says about you?
Genesis 1:27 tells us we’re made in the image of God. So, we can’t fully know who we are unless we know who God is. Take some time to write down some characteristics of God.
