PARENT BIBLE STUDY

Read: Luke 15:8-10

The truth that we are loved by God is arguably one of the most forgotten truths. Sometimes we fall into the trap of believing instead that we have to earn our value and love from God by the things we do. Then we may spend our entire lives striving, comparing, and being constantly disappointed. Sometimes we buy into the lie that we have absolutely no value at all. If Satan can convince us, in any blatant or subtle way, that we are in fact not valued and loved by God, then we go on searching for value in anything but God. The problem is, any other thing in which we find value will ultimately let us down. So we continue to believe we are worthless and insignificant.

Jesus tells the story of the lost coin to communicate the truth of our value to God. Like the coin, we have inherent value because Jesus created us and loves us. The dictionary defines precious as highly esteemed, very valuable, beloved, cherished, and adored. God says we are precious in Isaiah 43 because we are his, he formed us, called us and redeemed us. We belong to him.

No matter what we do or don't do, we are precious to God because we are his. And because God does not change, our value also remains constant. Maybe it’s hard for us to wrap our minds around this truth, but it’s an important truth to hold onto. God loves us. He searches for us until he finds us. We are precious. Just like the woman rejoiced when she found her coin, Jesus and all of heaven rejoice when we turn to him and he finds us.

In what ways, subtle or obvious, do you try to earn love or value from God?

What other places might you be searching for worth and value?

What does it mean to you to know that you are precious to God?
