What’s The Cost Of Freedom? Everything. | Be Free | Week 1

October 5, 2025 | By Jim Burgen

What if your story of freedom was meant to set someone else free? Week one of Be Free isn’t just a new series; it’s a call to arms. Jim Burgen kicks off a six-week journey that’s really the start of a movement: a church stepping out of comfort, out of safety, and into the front lines of spiritual battle. This message is a fire-starter, reminding us that our freedom in Christ isn't a finish line. It’s a launchpad. It's about turning pain into purpose, and choosing to fight for those still enslaved by guilt, shame, addiction, fear, or abuse. This isn’t a metaphor, it’s a mission. From Jim’s personal story of rescue to the biblical call from Galatians 5, this is an unapologetic, boots-on-the-ground invitation to stop playing defense and go to war for the hearts and futures of others. Be Free is about building spiritual outposts for the broken, the addicted, the trafficked, and the hopeless. We don’t hide in a fortress; we carry freedom into enemy territory. // Community Question: What does the word “Freedom” mean to you?

// Discussion Questions

  1. Read Galatians 5:1. What does it mean that Christ set us free 'FOR freedom'? How is this different from just being set free?
  2. Jim explained that Frontier forts were never meant to be final destinations, but outposts strategically planted to support pioneers going into the unknown. Similarly, churches shouldn't be fortresses to hide in, but outposts for equipping people to go out. How does Jim's comparison of churches to frontier forts challenge our traditional view of what a church should be?
  3. What does Jim mean when he says that following Jesus in this mission will cost 'EVERYTHING'? Why is this total commitment necessary? What might 'everything' look like in your life if you fully committed to this mission of bringing freedom to others?
  4. Jim emphasizes that 'free people free people.' What does this statement mean in the context of our Christian Walk, and why is it important that we don't just celebrate our own freedom? What areas of your past freedom story could God use to help others find freedom in Christ?

As you do, ask yourself: What might God be asking me to sacrifice so others can be free? And what would one step towards that sacrifice look like this week?
