35 Day Challenge

Leadership Isn’t About Being Right. It’s About Owning It. | 35 Day Challenge | Week 5

September 21, 2025 | By Jim Burgen

Leadership Isn’t Being Perfect. It’s Owning the Mess. In one of the most raw and repentant moments of his ministry, Pastor Jim Burgen confronts his own leadership failure and the silence that followed a week of national tragedy and personal loss. What follows is part confession, part challenge, and part rally cry—not just to Flatirons Church, but to every man wondering how to lead in a world on fire. Jim doesn’t pull punches: from owning his mistakes to declaring truth in a chaotic culture, this is the moment where courage meets clarity. This isn’t about politics. It’s about obedience. Jim speaks candidly on the assassination of Charlie Kirk and the school shooting in Evergreen, calling the Church to wake up—not with rage, but with righteousness. This is about standing firm on the Word of God, even when the world calls you crazy. You’ll hear what it means to lead with conviction, love people enough to tell the truth, and follow

Message Discussion Questions

35 Day Challenge - Jim Burgen
Sep 21st, 2025

// Bible References: Luke 22:39,41-46

// Community Question: How have the recent events in Evergreen and Charlie Kirk’s death affected you over the past couple of weeks?

// Discussion Questions

  1. Jim admitted he missed his responsibility to bring hope and comfort after such a significant moment. How does his apology model Christian leadership and accountability, and when have you needed to admit failure or ask forgiveness from others? Did you choose to seek that forgiveness? Why or why not?
  2. In tragedy, Jim reminded us that the most important question is: “Did they know Jesus as Lord and Savior?” How should that perspective shape the way we live, interact with, serve, and love people today?
  3. Going Deeper: Read Luke 22:39-40. Jesus warned His disciples about temptation during hard times: giving up or fighting back with the same anger aimed at them/us. How can we engage with people who disagree with us in a way that shows respect and leaves them knowing we care?

// Closing and Reflection Prayer – Leader Read to Group
As we close tonight, I want to give us a few minutes of quiet reflection. Go ahead and close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and picture yourself sitting at the feet of Jesus. In your heart, bring Him what you’re carrying—your current season, the hard things in our world, and the struggles or questions weighing on you. Sit with Him and hand those things over, and then I’ll close us in prayer. (Pause for 3–5 mins. of quiet prayer)

Closing Prayer Suggestion:
“Jesus, we bring You our fears, doubts, and questions. We admit we can’t carry these or make sense of life on our own. For those of us who already call You Lord, help us recommit ourselves to You—teach us to trust You, walk with You, and reflect Your love in a broken world in greater ways.

And for anyone here, or in our lives, who has never said yes to You, we pray they would call out and say: Jesus, I need You. I have sinned and cannot save myself. I believe You lived, died, and rose again to give me new life. Please forgive me and be my Lord and Savior.

For all of us, use us to share and live out this truth. From now on, we choose to follow You only. Thank You for loving us and being with us. In Your name we pray, Amen.”

Closing Reminder:
If someone prayed that prayer for the first time, celebrate that moment and then share, their next step is baptism, and that next weekend we’ll have baptisms at every Flatirons location (no sign-ups required, show up as a group). And remind your entire group that they are never alone. And as a group, let’s love each other this week in prayer and encouragement as we keep walking with Jesus together.
