Stop Believing This Lie | Week 2
April 19, 2026 | By Jim Burgen
What if the thing you run to for relief is the very thing destroying you?
This story pulls back the curtain on sexual brokenness, shame, and the quiet battles most men never talk about. It challenges the idea that porn and hidden sin are harmless, exposing how they shape identity, damage relationships, and leave you feeling empty. Instead of fear tactics, it points to something deeper: you were designed for real connection, not artificial substitutes.
Everything shifts when hidden pain is brought into the light. What starts as secrecy and self-medication becomes a turning point toward healing, honesty, and freedom. Jesus doesn’t shame you, He calls you out of hiding and into a new identity. The same story that once defined your guilt can become the very thing God uses to restore you and help others break free.

// Discussion Questions
- Jim shared that sexual sin isn’t worse in terms of God’s forgiveness, but it carries unique consequences because it impacts our bodies, identity, and relationships (1 Cor. 6:12–18). What stood out to you about that distinction, and why do you think God speaks so clearly about sexuality? More broadly, how have your choices (sexual or otherwise) shaped the way you see yourself, others, or even God?
- Jim used the idea of a treasury inspector, someone who knows what’s real so they can spot what’s counterfeit. Why is it important to understand God’s design for things like sexuality, identity, and relationships (Gen. 2:24–25; Matt. 19:3–9)? Where do you see tension between what culture says and what God says, and how can knowing His truth help you recognize what actually leads to life?
- Jim shared how some of his most broken and shame-filled moments became part of how God now uses his life. What does that reveal about God’s ability to redeem our past? Without sharing more than you’re comfortable with, are there parts of your story you’ve struggled to believe God could use for good, and what might it look like to begin trusting Him with that?
- Read Romans 12:1–2. Paul talks about not being shaped by the world’s way of thinking but being transformed by renewing our minds. Where do you see the world’s “operating system” influencing how people think about things like sexuality, identity, or worth? What might it look like, practically, to let God’s truth reshape the way you think and live not just in this area, but across your life?
// Challenge: God’s design isn’t meant to restrict us it’s meant to lead us into real freedom. This week, take one honest step toward living in that freedom. That might look like bringing something into the light, renewing your mind with truth, or inviting someone to walk with you instead of going it alone.
