When Life Falls Apart | Lessons from the Father of Jesus

What if your biggest interruption is actually God's invitation?
Ever feel like your whole life blew up before lunch? Like you were finally doing okay—until a phone call, a bill, or a betrayal flipped everything upside down? This message is for anyone trying to hold it together while life falls apart. From broken relationships to unexpected diagnoses, we all face moments where nothing makes sense.
In Matthew 1, we meet Joseph, caught in the middle of a personal disaster, and learn how God steps in when our plans unravel. Joseph’s story shows us that God works through broken family lines, shattered dreams, and gut-punch interruptions. God isn’t looking for perfect people. He uses weak ones. Hurt ones. Honest ones. The moment Joseph chose mercy over judgment, everything changed—and maybe that’s what God’s calling you to do too. If your life feels off course, maybe you’re exactly where God wants to show up.

- Karl talks about how God uses broken stories in Jesus's genealogy. Why do you think Matthew chose to highlight the broken parts of Jesus's family tree rather than hide them? What parts of your own story have you tried to hide, thinking they disqualify you from being used by God?
- The sermon discusses how interruptions in our lives aren't always obstacles but can be invitations from God. Can you think of a time when an unwanted interruption turned into something meaningful? What current interruption in your life might God be using to reveal His direction?
- Karl talks about having two relationship tools - a gavel and a bandage. Why is choosing mercy (the bandage) over judgment (the gavel) so important, and what makes it so challenging? In what relationship or situation are you currently holding a gavel when you should be reaching for a bandage?
- Going Deeper: Read Romans 8:28. How can we maintain hope when facing difficult circumstances, knowing that God works all things together for good? What situation in your life right now requires you to trust God's promise that He can work it for good?
// Challenge: Reflect on how God has worked in the broken parts of your life. How can you use that experience to show mercy to someone going through a difficult time this week?
