Five Chairs
Five Chairs : The Captain's Chair
August 10, 2025 | By Jim Burgen
What kind of legacy will you leave? One that spirals upward toward strength and faith, or downward toward destruction?
The 5 Chairs series calls out men to step into the Driver’s Seat and Captain’s Chair of their lives, not just for themselves, but for the generations that follow. From the early “me for me” years to leading a family from a “me for them” mindset, Pastor Jim Burgen lays out the hard truth: character drives your life, and the way you lead will shape your family’s future for better or worse.
Through raw honesty, biblical truth, and practical action steps, Jim challenges men to reject the lies of unworthiness, armor up for spiritual battle, and surround themselves with brothers who will fight alongside them. This is a call to reverse destructive patterns, protect your family, and build a legacy rooted in courage, faith, and sacrificial love.

- Legacy isn’t just about what we leave behind when we’re gone; it’s the impact we’re making every day. As a father, mentor, or person of influence, your actions are shaping the next generation right now. Reflect on your own life: What kind of legacy do you want to leave for your children, those you mentor, and the people who look up to you? What intentional actions can you take today to start building that legacy?
- What does it mean to 'act like men' in today's context vs what we read in the Bible, and how can this affect our relationships and things we put our effort into? Identify one area where you can take greater ownership of your actions, and consider how that step could lead to stronger, healthier relationships with those you lead and love. And/or how can you support the men (husband, father, son, etc.) in your life towards this?
- Jim challenged men to take responsibility for leading their families and communities. What is one concrete step you can take this week to lead with greater intentionality? Whether that’s initiating a spiritual conversation at home, showing up for a child’s activity, mentoring a younger man, or serving in your community?
- Going Deeper: Read Matthew 15:18–20. This passage reminds us that what comes out of our mouth and life flows from what’s in our heart. Think of a recent decision or conversation you had with your family, a mentee, or someone you influence. How did your character and the condition of your heart shape that interaction? What does this reveal about what God might want to grow or refine in you?
// Challenge: In the sermon, Jim challenged us to be in community with one another. Which of the following opportunities for growth and/or community can you commit to joining this Fall? (35 Day Challenge, Men’s/Couple’s Connect, a Men’s Bible study, Small Group, mid-size group, Herd Strong, or etc.) Also, whom can you invite to join you? If you're already in community, how can you step up to serve and lead more in that space?
