Forgiveness | Week 2

March 10, 2024 | By Ben Foote

Have you ever wrestled with the concept of forgiveness, especially when it feels impossible? In our series "Death to Religion," we explore Jesus's path to the cross and His transformative teachings on forgiveness, as exemplified by the Parable of the Unmerciful Servant in Matthew 18. This sermon encourages us to release resentment and embrace the freedom that comes with forgiveness for our own peace. Consider who in your life you can forgive for your personal liberation. 2. Read Mathew 18:23-35. The parable depicts a servant receiving forgiveness for a large debt but refusing to forgive a small debt owed to him. What is the primary message behind the Parable? How can we resist unforgiveness of others and instead cultivate gratitude for God’s forgiveness? How can this parable impact the way you view and practice forgiveness in your own life?
  3. Ben explains that forgiveness leads to reconciliation, healing, and freedom from the burden of resentment. How does forgiveness benefit both parties involved in a conflict? Can you share an example from your personal experience where forgiveness had a positive impact on both people involved?
  4. The sermon reminds us that forgiveness is a command from Jesus, and it releases us from the weight of negative emotions. Why is it easy to hold onto anger and bitterness? Why would it be important to seek freedom from their control? What steps can you take to move towards forgiveness and freedom from anger in your own life?
