House Of Dysfunction
What to Do When You’ve Been Treated Unfairly
July 6, 2025 | By Steven Lee
What do you do when someone wounds you, and you're left with the fallout?
Steven Lee shares a raw, personal story of betrayal and loss, wiring nearly all his savings to a scam artist, and how that wound could have shaped his story. But instead of staying stuck in pain or lashing out in revenge, Steven takes us to the cave with David in 1 Samuel 24, where we learn three ways to respond when life wounds us deeply: Resist the Drift, Respond with Honor, and Release the Outcome to God.
This message isn’t just about being hurt, it’s about who we’re becoming in the process. Steven walks through the tension of wanting payback vs. choosing restraint, trusting God even when the outcome doesn’t make sense, and how God uses our lowest moments to build something stronger in us. When pain tries to define us, faith gives us a better script. You don’t have to throw the spear.

House of Dysfunction – Week 3
Discussion Questions
July 6th, 2025
// Community Check In: A check-in is a simple time at the start of the group where everyone shares one high (something good) and one low (a challenge) they’re experiencing this season. It’s more than small talk it’s a chance to open hearts, build trust, and deepen connections by celebrating each other’s wins and supporting one another through struggles, just like Jesus calls us to do. Leaders should go first to model openness, vulnerability and set the tone for deeper sharing.
Leader Tip: When you share, don’t just describe what happened; talk about what feelings it brought up (joy, sadness, embarrassment, love, jealousy, fear, etc.) and why you felt that way. This helps the group move from surface-level updates to real, meaningful conversation. Remind everyone: during this time, we’re here to listen and support, not to fix each other’s problems.
// Discussion Questions
- Over the last few weeks, we’ve been learning about dysfunction; how it shows up in our lives, relationships, and the world around us, and how Jesus calls us to respond. Where have you noticed dysfunction lately, and how do you think Jesus is inviting you to respond with grace, truth, or another step?
- This week, we heard our campus pastor share about how dysfunction has shown up in their own life, along with their message on how God meets us in our mess. What about their personal story or teaching challenged or encouraged you?
- Over the past few weeks, we’ve read and been reminded of scriptures, many showing how God met people right in the middle of their dysfunction, and how He wants to meet us in ours today. Was there a specific verse, person’s life, or idea from these scriptures that challenged or encouraged you? Why?
- One of the ways God helps us navigate challenges and dysfunction is through the gift of community. Looking at your own life, how has being part of this group helped you deal with dysfunction, and in what ways has it challenged you to grow in your faith?
// Challenge: This week, what is one practical step you can take to invite Jesus into an area of dysfunction you’ve identified? Whether it’s reaching out for help, offering forgiveness, setting a boundary, or taking another step, how can we as a group support you in it?
