Dropped, Broken, and Chosen | Why Your Past Doesn’t Define You

July 13, 2025 | By Aaron Schroeder

What if your past wasn’t the end of your story, but the setup for a new beginning?

Mephibosheth was dropped, forgotten, and left crippled in a wasteland called Lo-Debar—literally a place of no pasture, no growth, no hope. But when the king came calling, everything changed. This is a story about covenant, not contract. It’s about a king who doesn’t demand performance but offers a seat at his table. It's about a man who expected judgment but got grace.

When everything in your past says you're unworthy, unwanted, or too broken, Jesus comes along and says, “You're mine.” This message from Aaron isn't just about a historical rescue—it's a spiritual invitation. Your story, no matter how messed up, doesn’t disqualify you. It actually sets the stage for redemption. Jesus doesn’t wait for you to clean it all up—He meets you right where you are and carries you to the table.

House of Dysfunction – Week 4

Discussion Questions

July 13th, 2025

//Bible References: 2 Samuel 9:1–13, 2 Samuel 4:4, Romans 8:1, 2 Corinthians 5:17

// Community Check In:  If you could have a seat at any table…past or present, real or fictional…whose table would it be and why?
(Could be a historical figure, a Bible character, a sports hero, a family member, or even a fictional character. This gets people talking while subtly pointing toward the deeper truth: God invites us to His table no matter our story.)

// Discussion Questions

  1. This week’s message demonstrated how David extended Kindness, or, more accurately, covenant love, to Mephibosheth —a man with a broken past and no ability to earn his place at the king’s table. What part of this story stood out to you or hit close to home, and why?
  2. David didn’t just restore Mephibosheth; he gave him a seat at his table like one of the king’s own sons. How does that image of belonging speak to your identity in Christ today? What does it stir up in you?
  3. Going Deeper: In the message, we heard how many of us brace for judgment from Jesus instead of trusting His kindness, like we're just waiting for the rug to be pulled out from under us. Have you ever struggled to believe that Jesus wants to meet you with love, not punishment?
  • What do you think shapes your view of how Jesus responds to your failures, your past experiences, your upbringing, or something else?
  • Read Romans 8:1: “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” How does this verse push back on the fear that Jesus is just waiting to judge us?

// Challenge: This week, what’s one way you can live like someone who has a seat at the King’s table? Maybe it’s receiving grace instead of shame…forgiving someone in your life…or reminding someone else of their value. What’s one step you’ll take, and how can this group support you in it?
