GROUP QUESTIONS

// Bible References
 Matthew 6: 19-21, 19:16-22, Luke 12:16-21 Deuteronomy 8:12-14, 17-18

// Community Question

It has been said “What we have gets tied up in who we are.” Do you agree? Why or why not?

// Discussion Questions

  1. Read Matthew 19:16-19 In this passage Jesus sets the focus on the eternal and relays commandments that focus on how the rich young ruler relates to others. This is because what we believe about God is always revealed in how we treat people. What would our treatment of the people in our life say about our belief in God?
  2. Read Matthew 19:20-22 In this passage Jesus asked the young ruler to give away all his possessions because they had a hold on his heart. Does anything have a hold on our heart that is off limits to God? What are they? (ex: dating, finances, alcohol, etc.)
  3. Read Deuteronomy 8:12-14, 17-18 (NIV) How would thinking about our wealth as a gift from God and we are stewards, (not owners) of that wealth change our approach towards it?
  4. Read Luke 12:15; Matthew 6:19-21 In this passage Jesus is shifting our focus from this world’s treasure being our hope, fulfillment, and happiness to His Kingdom being our hope, fulfillment, etc. How could this shift give us more peace, joy, calm, and fulfillment during difficulty?
  5. Discuss your thoughts around the following statements: When we give generously it’s good for our souls. When our hearts detach from this world they attach to God. When we demonstrate our faith, God demonstrates His faithfulness.

// Challenge:  We can resist putting our hope in the world and putting our treasure in God’s kingdom in the following ways:
Spending Fast: Choosing to not buy an item we want to increase personal gratitude and decrease materialism.

Asking God what and where to give: Committing acts of kindness through random giving to those in need.

Re-occurring giving: Making a one-time decision to give and turning that decision into a habit by automation.
Are you willing to try one of the three for the next 30 days, 90 days, or a year? Which one?
