Is This Heaven?

Heaven On Earth

July 6, 2025 | By Jesse DeYoung

What if the emptiness you feel isn’t because you’re doing life wrong, but because you’re expecting earth to deliver what only heaven can? We’re kicking off Heaven Week 1 by rethinking everything we thought we knew about the afterlife. Most of us don’t have time to think about heaven—we’re just trying to get through the week. But what if a right view of heaven could radically change the way we live right now? What if the soul-deep ache we carry is a sign that we were made for more than just this world? This message challenges the idea that heaven is just something to deal with when we die. Drawing from Hebrews 11, Philippians 3, and CS Lewis, we uncover how a deep hope in heaven reshapes how we parent, grieve, hustle, forgive, and live. We’re not here to escape the world—we’re here to bring heaven into it, one faithful act at a time. Because this world isn’t our home. And when we live like heaven is real, it changes everything.

// Discussion Questions

  1. Jesse talked about how a lot of people are caught up in their daily lives and responsibilities, thinking they can deal with heaven later. Why do you think many people today are so focused on getting the most out of their life on earth, rather than thinking about heaven? How can we shift our focus to include thoughts about heaven in our daily lives?
  2. Jesse talked about how we often try to build our own version of 'heaven' here on earth (chasing comfort, success, or stuff) only to end up feeling empty. Why do you think things like wealth, safety, or even achievement don’t fully satisfy us? Have you ever chased something that felt good in the moment but didn’t last? What did that experience teach you?
  3. Jesse shared that as followers of Jesus, we get to bring glimpses of heaven to earth through how we live. What are some practical ways you can be a “signpost” of heaven, pointing others toward hope, love, and Jesus?
  4. Going Deeper: Read Hebrews Chapter 11
    These heroes of the faith saw themselves as strangers and exiles on earth, and that shaped how they lived. How did they respond when God’s promises weren’t fulfilled in their lifetime, and what does that reveal about where they placed their hope? How might their perspective challenge the way we view our own lives, especially when things don’t go as planned or when we're tempted to look for fulfillment in temporary things?

// Challenge: Jesse challenged us to start seeing life through a heavenly perspective. What’s one area of your life (like work, relationships, or how you spend your time) where you need to shift from an earthly mindset to a heavenly one? How can this group support you in that shift through prayer, encouragement, or help? And what’s one simple way you can show compassion, kindness, or hope to someone this week?
