Book Of John
John 16 | Week 11
March 15, 2026 | By Jesse DeYoung
What if the voice you have been looking for has been speaking all along but your life is too loud to hear it?
In John 16, Jesus sits with his closest friends hours before the cross and tells them something shocking. It is actually better for them if He leaves. Why? Because God would send the Holy Spirit to live inside them. Not beside them. Inside them. The Helper who convicts, guides, comforts, and strengthens when life gets heavy. In a noisy world full of pressure, distraction, and confusion, many of us want God’s direction but ignore the conviction that comes first.
The Holy Spirit does not shout over the chaos. He nudges. He exposes the baggage holding us back and leads us toward the life God designed. Conviction is not shame. It is an invitation to drop what is weighing you down so you can move forward. When we slow down and listen, we discover we are not alone, we are stronger than we think, and God is still guiding every step.

// Discussion Questions
- Jesse mentions how the disciples went from being afraid and running away to preaching boldly to thousands after receiving the Holy Spirit. How does this demonstrate the Spirit's power to change people? What area of your life do you feel needs transformation, and how might surrendering to the Holy Spirit's work bring about that change?
- John 16:14 says the Holy Spirit's role is to glorify Jesus rather than draw attention to Himself. How does this challenge our understanding of the Spirit's work in our lives? In what ways might you be seeking spiritual experiences for their own sake rather than allowing them to draw you closer to Jesus?
- Conviction says, 'You're wrong, but there is a way back from this' while condemnation says, 'you're wrong and there is no hope for a person like you.' Why is this difference important for believers to understand?
- Going Deeper: Read John 16:7. Why does Jesus tell his disciples that it is better for them if He goes away so the Helper can come? In what ways have you experienced the Holy Spirit's presence and guidance in your own life?
// Challenge: How can you find some time to listen to the Spirit on your own this week? What are some steps you need to take to ensure this time will happen?
