The Giants | Rebellion | Week 2

November 4, 2023 | By Jim Burgen

Today we are going to look at one of the weirdest least talked about five verses in the Bible. But let's be honest, historically, if it’s weird or doesn’t make sense, the church usually skips over it or avoids it. But if we study these verses in the historical context we believe it will explain what is happening not just in the Bible but what is happening in our world today.

// Community Question
Throughout the past few weeks, we've delved into the fascinating and sometimes perplexing subject of Spiritual Warfare. As we begin, take a moment to reflect and share what you've found most enlightening or thought-provoking about our recent teachings.

// Discussion Questions

  1. Read Genesis 6:1-5. These verses discuss the story of Nephilim, who were offspring of fallen sons of God and human women. Do you think it is important to discuss the lesser-known or uncomfortable parts? Why or why not?
  2. Jim explained that the Nephilim were considered a rebellion against God because they involved the fallen sons of God, who sinned and mated with human women. Can you give any other examples of rebellion in the Bible? How can we learn from these stories to avoid similar rebellious behavior in our own lives?
  3. Jim defined ancient Babylonian idolatry as “turning away from God and turning towards someone or something for what only God can provide.” How does/can Babylonian idolatry relate to contemporary society? In what ways do you see idolatry in your own life? How can you actively turn away from these idols and focus on the One True God?
  4. Jim emphasized the importance of being rooted in God's Word as a defense against attacks from the devil. How can knowing and holding onto the truth of God's Word help us stand firm against the schemes of the devil?
  5. Read Eph 6:10-12. What warnings does the Apostle Paul give? What are some practical ways you can put on the armor of God to be protected from spiritual attacks?

// Challenge: How can you personally commit to studying and applying God's Word in your life to be better equipped to face spiritual challenges?
