Word To The Wise

The Wise Run The Other Direction | Week 5

May 21, 2023 | By Jim Burgen

Very few of our biggest mistakes and regrets started with the goal of blowing up our lives. How many of our biggest regrets started with "I’m just going to do this one time," and now it's taken on a life of its own? We told ourselves we wanted to have it; now, it has us. We're humans too, we get it, but the good news is we can prevent this from happening again as we put the pieces back together. Today Jim will walk us through Proverbs as we look at wise ways to approach sin and temptations and set ourselves up to experience fewer regrets and mistakes.

// Community Question
What does wisdom look like? Describe a person in your life that you think is wise, what characteristics do they have? How do they approach life?

// Discussion Questions

  1. In his sermon, Jim said the key to making a wise decision is to reflect on your given life and what is at stake. How could reflecting on the big picture lead to wise decisions?
  2. Read John 14:15-21,25-26; Acts 2: 38. Jim relayed that forgiveness for sins is the starting line for believers, not the finish line. Once forgiven, we can move forward, learning how to live a life that sin made impossible for us by learning to listen to the Holy Spirit. What past situation in your life can you reflect on to identify moments when you followed the Holy Spirit and when you did not?
  3. Read Proverbs 3:5-6. Jim suggested developing a strategy, being in a relationship with Jesus through the word and prayer, and surrounding ourselves with a community of wise people. Which of these strategies do you currently practice in your life, and which ones do you feel you need to improve or include?
  4. Jim summarized his message with this phrase. “The wise man/woman who listens to the Spirit sees danger, makes a plan, and flees. The foolish man or woman keeps going and suffers.“ How can you apply the ideas and principles covered this week into your decision process to hear and follow the Holy Spirit better, love people more, and impact the world around you for good?

// Challenge:  What specific area of your life is the Holy Spirit suggesting is dangerous, and you need to hide from it, make a plan, and get away from it to remove it from your life?
