Faith Starts with Remembering

November 23, 2025 | By Jesse DeYoung

What if your future depends on what you choose to remember?

Most of us don’t forget because we’re careless; we forget because we’re human. And when life gets comfortable, memory fades. This message is a bold call to stop letting the wrong memories shape your decisions and start remembering who really brought you through. Whether it’s walking into freedom, surviving heartbreak, or climbing out of rock bottom, God’s faithfulness is worth remembering. This isn’t about nostalgia. This is about building altars in our lives so we don’t forget who filled us when we were empty.

If we remember what God has done, we’ll live like we’re not alone.
From ancient altars to modern church gatherings, this teaching challenges the idea that strength means carrying everything yourself. Men, especially, are called to let go of the pressure to be their own providers and lean on the One who actually is. Through traditions, personal rhythms, and a community that remembers together, we discover that God’s faithfulness isn’t just a thing of the past; it’s still unfolding in our lives today.

// Discussion Questions

  1. Jesse mentions that 'what we remember shapes our decisions.' Can you think of a time when a memory influenced an important decision you made? Was that memory accurate or selective? How might your current decisions be influenced by incomplete or selective memories of past experiences?
  2. How does gathering as a church community help strengthen our individual faith and memory of God's faithfulness? Can you share a specific time when being in church helped restore your faith or shift your perspective?
  3. The Israelites used altars and festivals as ways to remember God's faithfulness. What are some practical ways we can create 'modern altars' in our lives to remember God's faithfulness?
  4. Going Deeper: In Deuteronomy 6:10-12, 20-25. God warns the Israelites not to forget Him when they enter the promised land and inherit all the good things they did not build. Why do you think people tend to forget God's provision when life gets comfortable? Think about a time in your life when things were going well - how did it affect your memory of what God had done and your relationship with Him?

// Challenge: Gratitude Practice: Gratitude helps us see and remember Jesus in the middle of our everyday lives. Over the next week, make space each day to write down two or three things you’re thankful for. They don’t have to be big moments; maybe it’s your dog greeting you at the door, a sunrise on your commute, a good cup of coffee, health, or time with family and friends.

After you add to your list, take a moment to pause and tell Jesus “Thank You” for those blessings. Gratitude shifts our focus from what’s missing to where He’s already working.

When your group meets next time, take a few minutes to share part of your list as encouragement to one another and help the group see Jesus more.
